Coupled hydro-mechanical simulation in the carbonate reservoir of a giant oil field in southwest Iran

Abstract The Asmari reservoir in southwest Iran has been producing oil continuously for over 50 years. However, due to an essential pressure decline, the is now a potential candidate injection projects. geomechanical analysis successful operation enhance production and address possible challenges. An accurate estimation of necessary maintain optimal conditions during process reduce risks. In this work, coupled reservoir-geomechanical model, as well rock mechanical tests, performed evaluate not only variation associated situ stress changes but also their influences on fault reactivation, reservoir–caprock stability, surface displacement. For evaluation, empirical correlations are derived between static dynamic properties based core data existing petrophysical logs studied system. Based hydro-mechanical results, maximum displacement limited vicinity wells, where highest occur. system shows that stable until reaches 4.3× initial pressure. Also, high enough compromise integrity faults, indicating loading planes too low reactivate pre-existing faults. approach followed study can be applied future field development strategies feasibility considerations CO 2 sequestration underground gas storage
